TIN-O-LIN™

Description:

A premium quality, slow-drying linseed oil-based primer and finish coat for use on lead/tin plated terne metal roofing only. Recommended for spot priming exposed and rusted areas of old terne only.

Colors:

TIN-O-LIN is available in red, green, gray, brown, and black. This product will change to a matte finish in approximately one year. For a gloss finish, apply one coat of Clearcoat 44.

Dry-Time:

Tack-Free 48 to 72 hours - longer in cool weather. Re-coat after 7 to 10 days.

Coverage:

400 ft.2/gallon.

Application:

TIN-O-LIN must be brushed, avoiding thick paint deposits.

Characteristics:

TIN-O-LIN is a 91% solids linseed oil based coating with iron oxide and other ingredients that help it gain superior penetration and adhesion to ferrous metal roofing products. Max. VOC content 150 gr/ltr, 1.2 lbs/gal.

Clean up:

Oil-based coatings: mineral spirits, then soap and water.

Cautions:

Never apply Shower-Proof over new (less than 1 year old) TIN-O-LIN. Do not apply oil-based Shower-Proof or TIN-O-LIN directly to asphalt coatings, vinyl, copper, stainless steel or any zinc coated (galvanized) metals including Follansbee® Terne II®; use waterborne Shower-Proof "WB" instead.

Paint only when weather conditions are warm and dry. Apply only at temperatures from 40°F to 80°F (air and surface). Do not paint if rain is forecast within the tack-free time. Starting after 10 am and stopping by 4 pm gives best results. Condensation on wet paint film will flatten the coating's finish prematurely and unevenly, but does not affect adhesion or durability. Never paint over condensation. Painting at temperatures above 80°F could cause coatings to dry too quickly resulting in poor adhesion and flexibility. Re-coating too quickly can delay thorough drying and cause bubbling and wrinkling. Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet for complete health and environmental information.

Flashing (flattening) will occur if dew settles on the roof while the coating is wet. This will not affect the protective qualities of the coating.

It is suggested that painters wear rubber-soled shoes while working to minimize wear on the coating. Avoid unnecessary walking on the roof. Do not use the roof for storage.

Do not apply when ambient or surface temperatures are below 40°F or above 80°.
Do not apply when there is a threat of rain.
Not recommended for use on EPDM roofing or on fluoropolymer (i.e. KYNAR®) finishes.

Surface preparation for previously coated terne:

(Tin roof metal, manufactured before 1999) Surface to be coated must be clean and free of water, oil, rust, dust, dirt, mildew, soldering fluxes, tree sap, or any foreign matter that can potentially interfere with adhesion. If cleaning is necessary, we recommend a detergent wash and rinse as described. Wash with TSP to remove "chalk", dirt, rust, and loose paint. Rinse thoroughly and let dry completely. Alternately, hand scrape peeling sections with a wood or plastic scraper (the sharp end of a cedar shake works well) then clean rust areas with a stiff bristle brush - a wire brush or metal scraper could damage the tin. Then pour a heavy-duty solution of TSP in warm water on roof and scrub with a stiff bristled brush or floor broom. Rinse thoroughly and let dry completely. Spot prime all exposed metal with TIN-O-LIN Tinners Red or Tinners Brown for maximum rust inhibiting properties. Apply two coats of TIN-O-LIN linseed oil alkyd roof paint. Second coat of TIN-O-LIN may be applied in 7 to 10 days.

Tinting/Thinning:

Not recommended.

Stirring:

Stir the paint thoroughly, immediately before using and frequently during application.

Packaging:

Available in 1 gallon (3.785 liters) and 5 gallons (18.927 liters) containers.
